Favorite Memory from your time at Conception Seminary College?
Laughing and joking with my friends, planning things for May Day. (I can neither confirm nor deny my involvement in any pranks.)
Favorite course you took at CSC?
Wow, that’s tough. Either Ethics, Calligraphy, Philosophy of Human Nature, or Preaching the New Evangelization.
What will you miss the most CSC?
A couple of things: the fraternity has been amazing. I’m happy to call these men brothers and to grow and mature alongside them. Most especially–and something I may not find so easily elsewhere–the opportunities for silence and solitude. It’s been great to have the chance to sit outside and look at the stars, or down by the fire at Maria Loch, simply being alone. Amid life’s busy-ness, that’s a rare opportunity!
Favorite Sacred Scripture passage?
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. ” John 15:9-13
What did you learn most while at CSC?
The IMPORTANCE of prayer. It is the one thing that keeps you grounded for the rest of your day, and it teaches you the importance of relationship–including with others around you. Relationships make us more human!
Words of wisdom?
God is always there. Always. Seminarians – give formation all you’ve got! You get out more than you put in, but you have to put yourself into it. Be open!
What ways have you grown as a result of the formation at CSC?
I am much more aware of myself and my impact on others. The formation gives you the tools to be a well-adjusted, productive member of society in whatever capacity you serve after you leave.
Current reading?
In the Shadow of His Wings by Fr. Goldmann. It’s about a German seminarian drafted into the SS against his will.
Patron Saints?
Confirmation – St. Anthony of Padua. Very influential in preaching the Gospel! St. Therese of Liseux is near and dear to my heart. Her “Little Way” spirituality has influenced me deeply!
Any words to offer about those that helped in your formation at CSC?
Thank you. You’ve given me more than I’ll ever be able to put into words. Your examples as good and holy people are continual inspirations!
Favorite spiritual reading?
Searching for and Maintaining Peace and Interior Freedom – by Fr. Jacques Phillipe. They are extremely rich, and yet simple.
Greatest impact on your decision to enter seminary? Why?
(Besides God) My spiritual director at KU. He was great encouragement in the difficult decision I had to make.
Favorite hour of the Divine Office?
Daytime prayer. Not because it’s the shortest, but because it is great to take a rest during the busy schedule of the day and reconnect with God.
